"Will
you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity
of every human being?"
... page 305 of The Book of Common Prayer of The Episcopal Church
One of the most effective
way for us to learn to live in peace with one another is to pay particular
attention to a very simple, yet powerful, seven word phrase of our Baptismal Covenant which calls upon us to 'respect
the dignity of every human being'.
Respecting
the dignity of every human being is fundamentally about our relationships
within the Church, the Body of Christ. It describes ways in which
all of us share responsibility for making our Church a safe haven for all
of God's people.
As
believers in Jesus Christ and the Gospel, we are called to create an environment
in our Churches which affirms the dignity and worth of persons as lovingly
created in the image of God. To that end, it is our responsibility
to denounce oppression in all forms, including all forms of discrimination
against our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
(LGBT) brothers and sisters.
Respecting
the dignity of every human being calls upon us to remove all barriers to our LGBT brothers and sisters in
having full access to and participation in all of our Churches Sacraments
and Ordinations. Loving relationships must be allowed to receive the
full Blessing of the Church. Individuals who are called upon to become
Priests or Bishops must not be prohibited realizing their calling because of their
sexual orientation.
